Jingshi Tongwen Academy, Tongwen Academy for short, the first foreign language school in China, was established in 1862. Guangzhou Tongwen Academy, founded on June, 23, 1864 (May, 30, the Third Year under the Reign of Tongzhi, the then Emperor), is the second Tongwen Academy in China’s history, the earliest foreign language school in Guangdong and the most ancient new-style school featuring modernized significance. The incipient period of Westernization Movement saw close exchange between China and western nations and Guangzhou Tongwen Academy was established under advocating of Li Hongzhang. ‘Tongwen’, as in ‘Tongwen Academy’, carries the meaning of ‘learning of western culture and extend Sino-foreign exchange’ that cultivated a batch of talents versed at Chinese and Western scholarship and pushed forward advancement of education in modern and contemporary times of China. At the initial period of preparing for the Affiliation Foreign Language School of SCNU, Tongwen Academy, by tracing its source, comes down in the same strain with Guangzhou Academy that put cultivation of the clear-eyed and intelligent as the foundation.
